Luther Campbell Calls Out NFL and Jay-Z About the NFL’s Super Bowl half time show in Miami
By Ruben Blanco
Recently the NFL announced that Latin mega stars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira would headline the Pepsi Half time show at this year’s Super Bowl in Miami in February.
The announcement met with much applause from the Latin community and supporters of these two icons of modern music. While followers of the NFL may recall some of its challenges over the last couple of years behind the Colin Kaepernick who initiated the “take a knee” protest against police brutality and social injustice in America.
In the aftermath of this period of racial and political turmoil that the Kaepernick situation creates in the NFL, there was much debate in the African- American community with the subsequent agreement with rap artist and RockNation CEO Jay-Z, to work with the NFL on entertainment engagements. This move left a great many Jay-Z and Social Justice hawks baffled.
And with his first move pertaining to his NFL partnership, Jay Z is being criticized following the announcement of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Super Bowl half time show.
But one Miami music legend is stepping up and criticizing both Jay-Z and the NFL on not having any home grown Miami artist represented in this year’s Super Bowl. Miami Rap Icon Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell has taken to Instagram to announce his displeasure at the NFL’s Super Bowl line up.
Campbell is quoted as saying: “the NFL is ignoring all of the African-American entertainment here in my Miami – they don’t even have the sense to go get Pit Bull, FlowRida or Rick Ross”..
Campbell goes on to express that the NFL will be coming to Miami and exploiting the community. Campbell said, “Miami does not need the NFL, the NFL needs Miami, Our hotels are already full”. Campbell continues by calling out Jay-Z to fix the situation.
It remains to be seen if the NFL and Jay-Z will hear these critics and add a Miami artist or two to the half time show. But it does not seem that supporters of the Miami music scene will let this go anytime soon.
