‘Defund The Police’ & ‘Socialism’ Cost Democrats Seats In Congress, Says Clyburn

With the Biden/Harris win, Democrats are celebrating but must still determine why they lost critical congressional elections. House Majority Whip Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said labels like ‘socialism’ and mantras like ‘defund the police’ contributed to their losses.

Democrats, who went into the election hopeful of gaining control of the Senate and bolstering their majority in the House, suffered significant setbacks on both fronts, losing crucial, well-funded Senate races and so far around a half-dozen House seats, a number that could increase.

Clyburn, the highest-ranking Black lawmaker in Congress, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning that support for “defund the police” likely played a role in the results of at least two South Carolina races: Jaime Harrison’s failed challenge to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Joe Cunningham’s (D-S.C.) reelection bid loss.

“I believe that’s why Joe Cunningham lost his seat,” said Clyburn, adding that empathy for the movement also “hurt” Harrison: “Jaime Harrison started to plateau when ‘defund the police’ showed up with a caption on TV right across his head.” Clyburn said that ‘Defund the Police’ today reminded him of ‘Burn Baby Burn’ in the 1960, maybe alienating voters in swing states. Defund the Police is a progressive movement to reduce and redistribute policing budgets that gained traction over the summer.

Both Cunningham and Harrison have said they do not support defunding the police, but have pushed for other policing reforms.

“We are all about making headway, and I just hope that going forward, we will think about each one of these congressional districts and let people represent their districts,” said Clyburn.

The part progressive wing has condemned this finger-pointing. “The conversation is a little bit deeper than that, than just saying anything progressive is toxic and a losing message,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) during a Sunday appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We have assets to offer the party that the party has not yet fully leaned into.”
