Georgia Sentinel Founder Dies from Covid; Leaves Behind a Great Legacy
Andre Moses White, 75, passed away from Covid19 June 9, 2020, in his Stone Mountain home. In Atlanta, most knew him as Moses White, the tall, larger-than-life man with a deep booming voice. He founded the Georgia Sentinel in 1989, targeting Atlanta’s Black community.
White was a pioneer in the truest sense. As the Sentinel’s founder he helped to initiate ground breaking strategies and objectives. The Georgia Sentinel made history as Atlanta’s the first Black newspaper to receive national movie and entertainment ads from mainstream advertising agencies. Mr. White was very active in the community And served as the President of the Auburn Avenue Merchants Association in 1991 when he led the team to bring back the Auburn Avenue Festival. At this renewed event, he personally got James Brown to reunite with the Famous Flames for a reunion concert for free, in benefit to the merchants. He also facilitated the very first introduction of James Brown and Coretta Scott King at this festival. This festival was the precursor to Atlanta’s now famous Midtown Music Festival.
Born October 7, 1944, in Winter Park, Florida, Andre was the third child of the late Moses White and Lucille Williams White.
After meeting Tampa’s Joyce Dupree at the age of 14, the two eloped in Thomasville, Georgia, on September 25, 1964. He attended Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education while playing Tight End under FAMU’s legendary Jake Gaither.
Upon graduation from FAMU, Andre was drafted by the Denver Broncos as a Tight End, played for the San Diego Chargers, and was one of the first African-Americans to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. Following football, Andre was the Road Manager for Marvin Gaye, and long-time confidant and business colleague of James Brown.
A true renaissance man with an adventurous spirit, he sought challenges throughout his life. At 71, Andre wrote and performed a patriotic anthem called We’re Americans and My Man, both under his middle name, Moses White, and available in digital outlets.
